APT MAKES A STAND FOR STREET FURNITURE!

What is believed to be the first crash-rated cycle stand with anti-terrorism/ram raid properties has been launched by APT Security Systems (part of the APT Controls group), the high-end integrator for high-performance vehicle access systems.

Designed in-house by APT engineers, the new cycle stand survived the impact of a 7.5 tonne vehicle striking it, at different angles, at 40mph, after successfully withstanding the impact of a 3.5 tonne vehicle hitting at 30mph in a previous. The completion of this impact testing meets the stringent criteria laid down for products awarded PAS anti-terror attack status. It is thus considered to be the only street furniture of its kind currently available in the UK as General Manager Chris Rowlands explains:

“In developing this product we wanted to re-examine the purpose of street furniture,” he says. “Of course it has to be aesthetically pleasing, to complement the environment, and be similarly practical. What is missing, however, are products that have a practical use, that look good, but that also have security qualities such that they are able to prevent a ram-raid style attack.”

Chris believes the new product is ideal for specifiers, designers and architects whose needs are not currently met: “Most commercial properties resort to blockers or other blockade products that serve only a single purpose and often look out of place in their surroundings,” Chris continues. “They can appear ‘hard' and often incongruous.

“The new APT cycle stand is very different,” he says. “It offers a composite solution not previously available, one that is much ‘gentler' on the eye and less obtrusive, but yet one that can still be used even after it is struck.”

APT's range of cycle racks can also be used an inner ‘core' for other street furniture, enabling designers to ‘clad' the cycle stand to create planters, seats, bus stops which make them ideal for highly pedestrianised or architectural areas like shopping centres, museums, embassies, transport terminals, listed building and the like.

The new APT cycle stand is easy to install, being engineered such that it requires only very shallow foundations (as little as 250mm). It is also available in any colour and any finish, to meet specifiers' requirements.
