PARKING IN GLASGOW MADE EASIER WITH APT SKIDATA

Visitors to five Glasgow car parks, managed by City Parking (Glasgow) LLP, are reporting an improved parking experience, thanks to the installation of the latest technology from APT Skidata, the UK's leading Pay-on-Foot parking systems business.

The installation comes as part of a major refurbishment programme, undertaken by City Parking (Glasgow) LLP, following the transfer of Glasgow City Council's off-street parking operation to the company in June 2007. City Parking (Glasgow) was tasked with improving the parking facilities across the city.

“We wanted to modernise car parks across the city, to make them more user-friendly,” explains Wayne Myrden, City Parking (Glasgow) LLP's Operations Manager. “The goal was to network four multi-storey car parks, together with one large surface car park, to be controlled centrally at our head office, enabling control and monitoring of the parking equipment, intercom system and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) system. We also wanted full integration between CCTV and Intercom systems giving us the flexibility of both audio and visual interface with our customers directly from central control.”

The contract was awarded on competitive tender to find suitable suppliers with expertise in networking multiple facilities within the UK market. Following a rigorous evaluation and scoring process, APT Skidata were awarded the contract. Previous experience with another City Parking (Glasgow) car park was an added benefit.

“Access and egress at the car parks, is now controlled via APT Skidata's Entry and Exit Columns and Barriers, interfaced with ANPR for enhanced security and vehicle tracking,” continues Wayne. “When a vehicle arrives, its registration number is recognised by the system, and networked back to a central control room, which also monitors the CCTV cameras at the car parks. Access control door readers and intercom help points have also been installed in the multi-storey car parks, strategically located to enhance security and safety

“Payment for parking has been made simpler with APT Skidata's Easy.Cash Auto Pay Stations. These offer customers more ways to pay, accepting coins, banknotes, and also chip & pin enabled credit and debit cards, in line with new banking legislation. This improves customer experience, eliminating the dreaded problem of trying to find the right change for the machine.

“The system is also proving useful in the case of lost tickets. Whereas previously we had no means of recognising what time a car arrived, now with the ANPR we can pinpoint the arrival of a car to charge fairly rather than the set maximum fee. Already the feedback on the new system has been extremely positive, with car park users reporting greater ease of use,” concludes Wayne.

The technology installed is based around APT SkiData's proven APT 450 PC-based range. The APT 450 is flexible in design and uses industry-standard software (Windows XP and SQL7 database). Each component of the revenue collection system is designed and manufactured from high-grade steel, cast aluminium and polycarbonate. It comprises a combined management computer/cashierwith ticket reader/coder and intercom facility to entries, exits and pay stations and features a sophisticated graphic user interface with integrated on-line help facilities, enabling the car parks to be run with seamless efficiency.
