    1. After reading just little of this book, I was going to write to B V Larson to see of he knew about this. After doing some research, I see they are friends and they have collaborated on book of separate short stories. I can tell they're friends. There's a lot of the same humor when it comes to some of the alien interactions. However good some of the parts were, it felt sloppy overall. There are some characters introduced that fall by the way side, the battle scenes were not explained enough to pi [...]

    2. I listened to the audiobook and felt bad for the narrator reading. If you want good alien fighting read Armor by John Steakly.

    3. Okay, great read. I'm sorry but if you're looking for great deep literary and insightful reading and you're disappointed in me when i recommend "brain candy".Oops.Pure brain candy, pure adventure nice action. I tend to like Vaughn Heppner's work. I mean I can only read 3 or 4 back to back and then need to move on to something else for a while. Still every now and then I think a lot of us need to take a break and read about some explosionsn fightsd other fights before we get back to the serious s [...]

    4. Because of this book (and a dry spell in book choices) I finally figured out what style of sci-fi I really enjoy. I get a kick out of humorous sci-fi such as Hard Luck Hank, Disc World, Hitchhikers, etc. But it can be too much of a good thing. The real bread and butter sci-fi for me is what I'll call the hero sci-fi. It's a story with a John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Sean Connery hero to focus on. He needs to be gritty and born of a rough past. He has to be decisive, lucky, a natural leader or lone [...]

    5. Vaughn Heppner's got writing about battle in his blood. This is my second novel of his, and once started it got under my skin. I had to read it. Had to know what the hell this guy Creed would do to survive another day and live up to his promise that he would make the scumbags who destroyed Earth pay. Creed is a former soldier and convict who wound up on a security detail at a base in Antarctica. Real hero, right? But this guy is more than his resume or rap sheet would lead you, the reader, to be [...]

    6. I started reading this, and I eventually had to stop. Its pulpy, cliched, melodrama incorporating every mil-sf and apocalyptic troupe that could be wedged between the covers. The writing and characterization are actually laughable. I laughed-out-loud at the Russian, female scientist's "perfect breasts". What do perfect breasts look like? (Who can say?) Creed, the hardened, self-educated ex-con has the purple-prosed vocabulary of a post-doc. Characters drop in-and-out, some never to be seen again. [...]

    7. This was a big, bawdy, over-the-top, mucho-macho sci-fi adventure. I just let my mind just go with the flow and cheer for the human/Earthers to survive. Vaughn Heppner kept me sucked in and I had fun! Carry on Creed and Company!

    8. I’ve read other titles by this author and thought I would give this one a try. I slugged through it, but while the basic premise is similar to other space operas this one left a lot to be desired. Without having a spoiler, the main character is not very believable – a washed up security guard in the middle of nowhere in Antarctica is suddenly a master fighter, strategist, and super-smart and is the sole person who can save humanity. The dialogue tried too hard to be witty, and many of the sc [...]

    9. 4.5 Stars - Pulp Fiction Sci Fi at Its Best! This is a great book. I would give it 4.5 stars if I could… If you are looking for highly intellectual speculative fiction, then this is not the book for you. If you are looking for military sci-fi pulp fiction at its absolute best, then you’re going to love this book. Well-traveled tropes, fairly predictable plot and semi-shallow characters but fun dialogue, excellent pacing and colorful world-building. I loved it!

    10. Good book! You can just zip right through this one. Very action-packed. Probably not something I would reread as I don't feel like there is a ton of depth here (not necessarily a bad thing), but after reading the first book I'm sure it's going to be a surprisingly pleasant romp through this series.

    11. Another fantastic series!Thank you again Vaughn Heppner for another fantastic series for me to recommen for summer reading list. Please keep writing, a fan.

    12. Great readEnjoyed reading this. Helper kept the words and tech speak to a minimum, mAking this an enjoyable read. Looking forward to the next installment in this series.

    13. Great book from HeppnerIn this one he used the lead player to describe what is going on as the story progresses. Great villain

    14. It was good but not as good as the Lost Starship series. However this wad the first book and maybe the next ones are better since this seemed more like a book for world building.

    15. Ohhh Myyyyyy (See What I Did There)I've never really written a bad book review giving most the benefit of the time they spent on their craft, and especially an author utilizing eBook formats. So in short, I wrote why I didn't like the book in the points below. Some of this is snarky, but take it as creative criticism because in the end, when you take the below points out or switch it up, you have a great book. BAM, "HALO champ"!Brass Tacks: A book of non-stop metaphors. "A metaphor is a figure o [...]

    16. More reviews (and no fluff) on the blog surrealtalvi.wordpress/About 25% into the Audible Narration, I began to feel that the song, "America, f$ck yeah!" was written as a spoof of this book. Super macho, lone wolf, bad a$$, bullet proof, survivor battles aliens in the face of defeat - and takes names while chewing bubble gum. It was so over the top, I felt hair growing on my chest - and I'm a woman. But at the same time, it also elicited grunts of disgust interspersed with giggles at the silline [...]

    17. I struggled with this book. I have loved Vaughn Heppner's Lost Starship series and quickly read through those 4 novels, thoroughly enjoying them. The Extinction Wars series, of which Assault Troopers is the first, was written prior to Lost Starship, but not by much. And yet the style and polish of Assault Troopers is, in my opinion far less memorable. Apart from the same author's name on the covers, I would not have intuited that these two series are from the same writer. Others have described t [...]

    18. This is probably the first book in years that I just couldn't finish. I made it to 80% and just couldn't care enough to finish. fwiw, this is just my opinion. If this type of book is your cup of tea then more power to you. The main character was annoying beyond redemption. I read somewhere else that this author was friends with B.V. Larson? If so, they obviously shared ideas. Only real difference is that Larson was able to hook me until book 3 or so before his story and characters got too wild a [...]

    19. BoilerplateLet's see, aliens that look like lizards and tigers, humanity almost wiped out by an invasion, the brave last stand by a group of survivors, led by a leader who's a mix of Schwarzenegger and Eastwood, women with pert breastsp, this one has almost every cliche known to sci-fi. Why, Heppner even constantly refers to laser guns and air cars. He may have been doing a tongue in cheek tribute to the sci-fi of the 50's, it's just not original and has cardboard cut outs for characters. Plus l [...]

    20. A Great, Well-Thought-Out and -Executed Book!I greatly enjoyed this well-thought-out and -executed book!Vaughn writes believably and as if he's been in prison and the military; his situations, dialog, and interpersonal relations all ring true. He explores the near-extinction of Earth by greedy aliens; Creed's indomitable will to live and to avenge his planet; his ever-toughening conversion into a fighting slave, then mercenary leader; a bit of swashbuckling romance; evil greedy aliens; a mysteri [...]

    21. (an audiobook review)OutDAMNstanding!Three attempts, three tries for me to commit. I just kept losing interest. Then finally I stayed with it and man its over the top fun. The main character is a cross between jack bauer(main character from the show 24) and Samuel jackson in any of his yelling roles. Hes nothing short of a badass. Earth is attacked and his entire focus is on humanity surviving and revenge. The main character is a ex soldier who has a strong knowledge of military warfare. This hi [...]

    22. I've read a lot of military sci-fi fiction from self-published authors. Some are really good, some not so. Unfortunately, this falls into the latter. An interesting premise, a failed army officer is one of the last survivors after aliens attack the Earth. He and thousands like him are enslaved and forced to fight as "assault troopers" in an interplanetary war. My main beef with this book is that the main character, Creed, and the android N7 are really the only interesting characters here. The se [...]

    23. Great readI have been meaning to read this book for awhile now but every time I think about it I end up doing a ARC or another type for someone and I don't mind that at all. Now on to the book it was well written about how earth was pretty much destroyed by an alien race and there were a few that made it , some were taken to be trained as mercenaries and now plot their revenge. Well you know by now I'm not one to give out too much of a good book but if you are like me you will love this series. [...]

    24. Begin the series with an engaging tale. My biggest complaint is the author treating the reader as if there were no knowledge of, or ability to investigate, historical events. He references the Spartans and then goes on to explain what it is he referenced. This detracts from the story by introducing long (too long, in my opinion) explanations I can see are meant to give background material, but drag the story down in the process. I continued to read on, however. The story is, at times, a bit of a [...]

    25. I've never been a huge fan of the Orson Scott Card innocent psychopathic killer character as a main character, and since I'm now old enough to do some analysis as I read halfway through this book I cannot be bothered to read more. With a touch of humor the irony of a man who loves fighting and killing going into a self righteous murderous rage every time he is told that his value is that of a beast which is efficient at fighting and murdering could make for fun reading while being exciting. Unfo [...]

    26. What a utter waste of time Didn't get past the first chapter. It is some kind of parody (I hope) but written without grace or any originality. The protagonist is a unlikable archetypical carbon copy of the 'murican myth of the underdog. All foreigners instantly acts as his sycophants, as appropriate when a true 'muricans comes around. He is stupid, but then, everybody else is even more stupidAnd no time was wasted on reserach apparently. I guess some inbred 'murican may find it amusing and perhap [...]

    27. good fun read, a real page turner, interesting world-building and good use of tension/suspense to drive the plot forward.minor issue the main character was a little too perfect (amazing soldier and inspirational leader and deep thinking philosopher) Heppner adds a lot of great life-lessons to the book that makes is a substantial read, however, I did not really believe that Creed would have had the type of philosophic insights that are attributed to him.

    28. I enjoyed Assault TroopersI enjoyed Assault Troopers, by Vaughn Heppner. This is the third book from Mr. Heppner that I have read (the first two are from the Lost Starship series). I enjoyed reading about the first adventure of Creed, the main character. This story is written in the form of a memoir, which helps make the story work. If you enjoy sci-fi, then I think you will enjoy this story.

    29. REALLY Good Storyline!I'm a grandmother, my children and grandchildren were raised on first Star Trek, then Star Wars in my early reading years my favorite authors were Isaac Asimov and Alan Dean Foster. Since I've read everythiNg they've ever written, I am so glad I've found Vaughn Heppner he really knows how to weave a story and drag you right into the middle of all the action. Now I'm looking forward to reading ALL of his books too.

    30. Really fun read. Simple plot that has been done a lot before, but a very quick and digestible meal. Some of the lines between the main character and the android were just classic! Feels a lot like works by BV Larson. I really hope there is a book 2. On a side note, there is a very copyright infringing looking Vorlon ship from the Babylon 5 tv series on the cover of this book. A little bit naughty if you ask me.
